Artist Statement

The painting process for me is something that can manipulate to define and convey meaning to its viewer.

An obsession between oil and layers has become the driving force within my work. The aesthetic value of the two has become a way in which I can explore further techniques. Paintings can portray and describe not only my own perceptions within a social context but also acts as a mirror for society to create their own perception/interpretation for themselves. I believe it was only through this idea I began to realise how differently one object can be perceived by its society in a modern context.

My works background revolves around both artists and theorists. GL Brierly's small scale oil paintings give insight into the humans nature to form a “fetish upon an object” as well as the video work of Teching Hsieh outlining this very same notion through video documentation. The current body of work explores the relationship of an object and its viewer through the visualisation of a personal moment in the form of AV and on the canvas using J,Gibson’s theory of “ every perception is formed from a series of unique stimulus”.
Throughout the work comes a refinement of emotional outcomes brought down to their raw stimulus. For the purpose of the current body of work my study is based within the confines of socially determined interpretation where a modern society chooses to perceive its world. Such a simple object can be loaded with emotion and history, telling all about its subject. Acting as a visual metaphor to convey the notion of invasiveness upon insecurity. The relationship formed by the viewer and the work becomes almost instinctive, engaging with the recognition and perceptual process.
